Over the summer Midnight Mystery Club has definitely had their fair share of success with three huge tracks so far. Third one has been out for a while now, titled ‘Calling Me’.
As previously posted here Midnight Mystery Club is a project created by David Paul Newell, previously know for another project called Playing Hooky. Right now David Paul Newell has teamed up with Michael Gray (best know for commercial success with his weekend anthem and tracks such as Borderline and Somewhere Beyond) since late 2015 for Midnight Mystery Club.
Blogs and social comments on Midnight Mystery Club have been mentioning similarities to either recent artists such as Empire Of The Sun or Cut Copy as well as some older work by for instance Peter Gabriel or Phil Collins. Both sound fair, according to the duo’s official biography Newell’s mostly aiming for influences by ‘Fleetwood Mac, Earth Wind & Fire, George Benson, Bobby Caldwell, Hall & Oates, Tears for Fears, Alan Parsons, Eurythmics, The Cars, 10cc, Sade, Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, The Eagles, Michael McDonald and The Doobie Brothers, Jackson Browne, Steely Dan, and America’. Though soundwise Midnight Mystery Club sounds a lot more like a younger generation of musicians, indie/electronic bands that emerged before and in the wake of Empire Of The Sun, Cut Copy, The Presets, Bag Raiders, Miami Horror and dj/producers such as Fred Falke, Russ Chimes or RAC.
Midnight Mystery Club does have it’s own distinct sound between all of those though. The instrumental production – still seems to be done by Michael Gray – is spot on. And every song by the duo has been a good song in terms of songwriting as well. Looking forward to hearing how the next few tracks are going to vary in terms of both production and songwriting, hopefully there are some remixes to come as well.
